Our Greenhouse Performance

Carbon is a key ingredient in the integrated steelmaking process worldwide. As Australia's largest iron and steel producer, BlueScope Steel is a significant emitter of greenhouse gases in Australia. Similarly, our New Zealand Steelworks is a major emitter. This reflects the nature of the steelmaking process at these two integrated steelmaking plants.

Of the greenhouse gases emitted by BlueScope Steel's operations in Australia, New Zealand and the Asia Pacific region, over 75 per cent are emitted by the Port Kembla Steelworks.

The increase in BlueScope Steel's greenhouse gas emissions over time reflects increased production of iron and steel at Port Kembla, which was a record 5.1 million tonnes for 2003-2004, to the economic benefit of the Company, employees, New South Wales and Australia.

Significantly, over the last three years we have improved greenhouse gas emission efficiency while increasing overall production.

Note - these figures do not include the small-scale emissions from the Butler Manufacturing operations acquired in April 2004.
