Asia/Pacific

In Asia, the focus of BlueScope Steel's community programs is to support activities that address the needs and priorities of our local neighbourhoods. We seek opportunities to work with our local communities in the countries in which we operate, to make an important contribution to their cultural and social welfare, and to make a positive impact on the lives of the people of those communities.

Many of our major community contributions in Asia have been tied to the products and services we offer. This includes the provision of temporary buildings, including rescue buildings and temporary housing, clinics and schools in flood affected areas of Thailand and Vietnam and in war-torn Timor, as well as transport, engineering assistance and building materials in India's Gujarat province following an earthquake.

Temporary and low cost housing has been provided for people in need.

When floods ravaged Northern Thailand and hundreds of traditional villages were destroyed, the Thai Red Cross appealed for required temporary housing. The Company was able to deliver 123 low cost houses to the region and designed, manufactured and installed four 'elevated clinics' for the region.

The response built on our previous experience in Vietnam following the flooding of its central region and Mekong Delta in 1999 where rescue buildings, schools and clinics were provided in partnership with the Red Cross, and with Australia's official aid agency AusAid.

Our major plant in Thailand is located in an area near a number of struggling orphanages and under-privileged primary schools, and we provide support in the form of advice, materials and scholarships. Employees are involved in these activities and the Thai culture of charitable giving is reflected, particularly on festival days, in employee fundraising for these charitable activities.

BlueScope Steel also provides support for local AIDS/HIV community associations in Thailand.

In Indonesia and Malaysia, we have donated roofing materials for a new local primary school and a local community hall.
