Illawarra

The Illawarra region of NSW is home to a significant part of BlueScope Steel's business, including the Port Kembla Steelworks and the Springhill Works.

The Company provides substantial support to the local community through a range of Community Partnerships, which are targeted mainly towards young people, education, arts and culture.

Significant Community Partnerships in 2003/2004 included the BlueScope Steel Star Theatre at the Wollongong Science Centre and Planetarium, the Children as Creative Social Beings project at Wollongong City Gallery and BlueScope Steel's Growing Great Gardens project, which incorporates a schools program and the Port Kembla Steelworks' Site Improvement Project (see Case Studies).

The Company continues to support the BlueScope Steel Youth Orchestra and the region's Surf Life Saving branches.

In addition to its Community Partnerships program in the Illawarra, BlueScope Steel also provides one-off donations to a range of local community groups, events and causes.

The Company is also a strong supporter of the region's emergency services. BlueScope Steel has agreed to provide A$300,000 worth of financial, material and in-kind support for a new South Coast regional headquarters building being constructed at Port Kembla for the State Emergency Service of New South Wales.
