American Field Service Exchange Scholarships

BlueScope Steel continues to offer its employees' children the chance of a lifetime - to spend a year abroad, studying and experiencing life in another country, through its AFS Intercultural Exchange Scholarship Program.

In 2005, the Company will be assisting two outstanding young people to embark on intercultural exchanges. Jon Goodin, the son of Peter Goodin from New Zealand Steel, will spend a year in Thailand and Leanne Chan Li Yen, the daughter of Chan Wai Yip from BlueScope Steel in Malaysia, will travel to New Zealand for her year-long cultural exchange.

BlueScope Steel AFS Scholarships help promote inter-cultural understanding by giving young people the opportunity to experience life and school in another country. They include return travel to the host family, orientation and enrichment activities and any medical costs incurred. The Scholarship Program has been running since 1985.

Students selected for scholarships act as ambassadors for BlueScope Steel, their country and culture and provide updates on their experiences in the form of photos and anecdotes.

The recipients of the 2004 scholarships will soon be returning home, having enjoyed a wealth of new experiences and with a greater understanding of life in their host country.

Ng Soo Chien of Malaysia has spent a year in Australia while Samuel Nicoll of New Zealand and Rachel Branch of Australia have learnt much about life in Thailand.
